Exodus 19:16 ESV
On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.
The people knew they were in the presence of God – powerful, divine and awesome. Rules were laid out that they had to prepare themselves prior to this meeting and even during the encounter, they had to observe rules lest they meet their doom.
Nowadays, we treat church with so much less awe and respect, and neglect preparation … we come late, we sleep, surf the net on our mobiles …
Could it be that it has become a routine for us, empty of the expectation to encounter God at the service itself?
Could it be that we have reduced it to a performance by musicians and a speaker – one that we critique and if we leave uninspired, that it’s solely their fault?
You get what you expect.
If you think you are a consumer, you get a show, nothing else.
If you think you are part of the heavenly chorus, praising God -and it’s not just the band or the choir – then your experience will be vastly different.
Mind you, that many were in Jesus’ presence but not all of them were genuinely changed by the experience.
