Let There Be No Divisions Among You – TWC Daily Devotional – Thursday 20 August 2015

To the same people who were wonderfully enriched by the Lord in so many ways, Paul had to appeal to them not to be divided! These were godly Christians and Christian leaders, yet they were puffed in pride, divided and competing against one another in the work of the gospel. Some say “I follow Paul”, others follow Apollos or Cephas or Christ. They took pride in their leaders in a wrong way. It became a contest about which leader was better, whose teaching was greater, etc. Doesn’t that sound strangely familiar? Christians today have also shown on occasions an unhealthy pride in their church or pastor. “Oh I’m from this mega church or that famous church, and my pastor is this or that! I subscribe and listen to the ministry of this or that anointed preacher!” We should be proud of our respective churches and pastors – in a way that affirms our sense of belonging and encourages our pastors, but never in a way that creates arrogance, competition and jealousy. The Corinthian church was blessed and gifted in amazing ways but they allowed what they possessed to cause strife and divisions amongst themselves. We must not be like that. As you walk with the Lord today, be thankful for your own church and pastors, at the same time, be affirming towards other churches and pastors unless of course there is serious theological defect in their doctrines. Even then, we need to be careful how we communicate our concerns so that the end result is that we build up one another respectfully and graciously. Have a great day!

Today’s Bible Text: 10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or”I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” (1Cor.1:10-12)
