It’s Who I Am Part 3 – TWC Daily Devotional – Sunday 23 August 2015

Over the last two devotions, we look at our identity as sons and daughters and also as servants and slaves of God. Today, we look at a third pair of words that describe who we are in the Lord – soldiers and warriors! In 2Tim.2:3,4, the Apostle Paul said, “Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.” He also said in Eph.6:20, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” The soldier of Christ must realize that there is a spiritual warfare that is raging all around us. It is not a battle that we can choose to start or not. It is already raging! There are already casualties and victors. We can either turn our backs and get hit or face the enemy and fight victoriously. When we choose to fight this war, we know we have victory in Christ because He has equipped us with the full armor of God. Notice that while there is a breastplate of righteousness (mentioned in Eph.6) to protect us when we face our enemy, there is no backplate to protect us when we turn and have our backs face the battle. As soldiers of Christ, we are called to a disciplined Christian life not a casual one. We are not to be entangled in affairs and pursuits that don’t matter in the Kingdom and our aim is to please the One who enlisted us. Too many believers see ourselves merely as sons and daughters of the Father, loved and cared for. When we do not realize our call as soldiers and warriors of Christ, the church becomes soft and vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy. We become weak and we suffer casualties. As you walk with the Lord today, know that you’re not only a son or a daughter in the Kingdom, you’re not only a servant of the Lord but also a soldier, a warrior of Jesus Christ! And when you rise up to your calling to fight on your knees, fight with the Word of truth in your hands, living a pure and righteous life, you will be victorious! No matter what the enemy might throw in your path, no matter how great a disappointment, failure or betrayal you may have gone through, when Jesus fights for you and with you, when you fight as a true Christian soldier, you win! Have a great day!

Day 24

by Rev Joel Yong

Numbers 36:6 ESV
This is what the Lord commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, Let them marry whom they think best, only they shall marry within the clan of the tribe of their father.

Lest people say the Bible is old fashioned and does not respect women – here we have women being free to marry, with only one guideline, that the wealth of the family be preserved by marrying within the clan.

Perhaps you might say – “But restricting it to only clan members, that’s still not complete freedom!”

God was interested in building up the people of Israel at this point. Tribe by tribe, He gave each their portion, like a father dividing wealth amongst children.

Unbalanced wealth would quickly lead to envy and jealousy arising in this new nation, when harmony and unity was of prime importance!

Numbers 36:7 ESV
The inheritance of the people of Israel shall not be transferred from one tribe to another, for every one of the people of Israel shall hold on to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

He preserved the freedom of the womenfolk with radical guidelines on marriage in an ancient time and yet gave economic guidelines for the people of Israel!!
Great is God’s wisdom!
