Revelation of John 2:4
But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
To the Church in Ephesus, God says the stain on their record is that of the abandonment of their first love for Him.
Fausset Brown in a commentary note, states that the Ephesian church’s love had given way to a ‘lifeless orthodoxy’.
That’s what church can be like. A routine and a ritual rather than an ongoing relationship with the Lord. We drag ourselves because it’s a weekly thing we do. We sing like zombies with no passion because this is the part of the service where you are supposed to stand and sing.
And guess what—
The children in our midst watch and learn. Soon the routine bereft of joy and life, becomes a bane to them too. ‘What relationship?’ they wonder.
Our approach to God each week must be one of passion, love and zeal. Like a young man eagerly awaiting his love to show up for their date night.
