Revelation of John 3:3
So remember what you received and heard. Obey, and change the way you think and act. If you’re not alert, I’ll come like a thief. You don’t know when I will come.
The church in Sardis had become purposeless. They cease to do what they were assigned and fell into sin.
Sin is disobedience to God. God reminds them that judgment is around the corner. He will come upon them when they least expect it.
Every church has a reason why it is, where it is, and a duty to carry out. That duty is not to please itself but to carry out the task of its Master.
I have seen congregations that make excuses about evangelism, about mission, about the standards of its Christian education ministry, about its policies on dealing with errant ministry staff and so on – because they seek to do what is easy and not what is hard, even though it is right.
When unsure, the church should always examine the basic call for any church and ask itself – “Is what we are allowing meant to serve man’s preferences or is it meant to serve God?” That’s a good starting point to begin the reflection
