Ruth, who was from Moab, said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field of anyone who will be kind to me. There I will gather the grain left behind by the reapers.” Naomi told her, “Go, my daughter.”
Gleaning is a provision made for in Leviticus.
When you harvest the grain in your land, don’t harvest the grain in the corners of your fields or gather what is left after you’re finished. Don’t harvest your vineyard a second time or pick up fallen grapes. Leave them for poor people and foreigners. I am the LORD your God.
It allows mercy to be shown to strangers and poor and also consigns harvesters to the acknowledgment of God’s will that whatever they drop or miss out of human error, during the harvest, would not be picked up but left to the needy.
It’s human to drop stuff or miss something here and there when you are harvesting and yet the stuff we drop/miss out on, isn’t random- God foresees that these would be so.
Think – the next time you make a ‘mistake’ and ‘lose’ something- maybe it isn’t a mistake. God intended to use what you had to bless another!!!
