But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments.
In their confessions, the people prayed and spoke of their rebellion against God.
The phrase used is “stiffened their neck”.
To “stiffen one’s neck” refers to an unwillingness to be guided.
An animal cannot be pulled by its reins to the left or right if it stiffens its neck. Its course , though headed the wrong way, cannot be corrected.
A refusal to obey God’s commands means one is on the wrong path and direction in life.
Only by submitting to His ways- can we fully experience life in its fullness as God intended.
