Song of Solomon 2:1-2
I am a rose of Sharon, a lily growing in the valleys. Like a lily among thorns, so is my true love among the young women.
In contrast the bridegroom is likened to an apple tree –
Song of Solomon 2:3
Like an apple tree among the trees in the forest, so is my beloved among the young men. I want to sit in his shadow. His fruit tastes sweet to me.
He is strong and sturdy in contrast to the lily.
Matthew Henry writes these interesting comments in his commentary-
“The lily is a very noble plant in the East; it grows to a considerable height, but has a weak stem. The church is weak in herself, yet is strong in Him that supports her. The wicked, the daughters of this world, who have no love to Christ, are as thorns, worthless and useless, noxious and hurtful.”
People need the Lord. The bride of Christ needs His support too on a daily basis.
We need to wake up each morning professing our weakness and lack without Him, lest we grow arrogant in our habits of self-reliance.
I do not mean that we demean ourselves daily. Rather, whilst we are aware that despite our inherent abilities and strengths- we confess daily that these are not enough to live holy lives and not enough to help us live the abundant life that only Jesus can give to us!
We fall short of the full experience of life if we are to live depending wholly on ourselves!
Lilies are beautiful … we all know that.
But their stems – this few are aware- need support.
