In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away. And his disciples answered him, How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?
Jesus was concerned that his followers would not be able to find food in time and faint along the way.
Note what the disciples said- they pointed out that they were in “a desolate place”.
Read on and you will find that Jesus makes food multiply in this desolate place, in order to feed His disciples.
Strange- He was in the wilderness when Satan tested Him and told Him to feed Himself by miraculously making food appear for Himself.
He didn’t. Because He knew His fasting would help Him to depend on God the Father.
Why didn’t Jesus say “Let My followers starve – it is good for them to depend on the Father for strength?”
Perhaps He knew our human limitations.
Perhaps He knew what we could bear.
And so He works His miracle so the multitudes might have their physical needs cared for.
How has your year been?
Off to a rocky start?
Remember that your God cares greatly for you.
He will provide.
He will save.
He will not test you beyond what you can bear.
