Day 283

by Rev Joel Yong

Romans 8:1-3
So those who are believers in Christ Jesus can no longer be condemned. The standards of the Spirit, who gives life through Christ Jesus, have set you free from the standards of sin and death. It is impossible to do what God’s standards demand because of the weakness our human nature has. But God sent his Son to have a human nature as sinners have and to pay for sin. That way God condemned sin in our corrupt nature.

We were once like guilty criminals awaiting to be charged and convicted.
But Jesus came and took our place – and our sentences. He put on those prisoners’ robes and shackles and in today’s context- sat on the electric chair.

That is what the Cross is- the ancient equivalent of today’s chair.

And because Jesus did that, we were released from the docks.
Our clothes were those of free men. And more than that – we became dressed as Jesus the Son of God did, so that when God looks at us, He does not see common folk or convicts but sons and daughters of God.

It is as if our immigration papers got approved and we became citizens of a new nation. A perfect nation. We are now the people of God.

And like any new migrant, we should live like people in the new land we now call ‘Home’, rather than the old nation we came from.

We talk in a new way.
We think in a new way.
We behave and live differently.

Romans 8:4
Therefore, we, who do not live by our corrupt nature but by our spiritual nature, are able to meet God’s standards.

Are you a citizen of Heaven?
Let’s live like we are, then.
